Cedar Decking

Cedar Decking is beautiful. The heartwood of cedar is rot resistant. This means 15 to 20 years is realistic when talking about the lifetime of the decking. Keep in mind the type of deck you are building and where it’s built will affect the longevity of your decking. If using cedar decking for a shaded deck or ground level deck deterioration will take less time. Cedar requires maintenance every couple years. You must clean and reseal it every other year at least. Cedar is soft and can be damaged easily as well. Cedar cost is median. It will cost less than composite but more than pressure treated decking.

Composite Decking

Low maintenance decking is always an attractive option to homeowners. Composite decking is made of recycled plastic and wood chips or sawdust. Composite decking won’t rot, splinter, or twist. The material won’t be easily damaged. The drawback of composite decking is, it lacks the real wood appearance. Maintaining composite decking is a breeze however, all you need is a hose.

Pressure-Treated Decking

Pressure-treated wood will provide longevity and is abuse resistant. Many products carry a limited lifetime warranty.¬† It’s also less expensive than cedar. However, you will trade price for quality when using pressure-treated decking. The negative side of pressure treated decking is that it may hold moisture, shrink unevenly, and twists when it dries. Your deck will last longer but will not remain visually attractive in its lifetime.¬†Because of these issues Custom Decks will not build decks using pressure treated decking.

No matter what type of decking you choose, a new deck will increase the value of your home if it’s built correctly. Choose a company with a proven track record such as Custom Decks.
